Payments as a Service

Platforms that expose payment initiation, processing, ledger, or settlement capabilities to other businesses through software interfaces.

Buying context

Why it matters

Payment services connect program users to bank accounts and external rails at software speed. The bank needs clear control over access, funds flow, limits, screening, exceptions, reconciliation, and partner conduct.

Due diligence

Questions to ask

  1. Which party can create users, accounts, payees, instructions, limits, returns, reversals, and exceptions?
  2. How do subledgers, custodial accounts, settlement accounts, rail reports, and the bank core reconcile?
  3. Where are identity, sanctions, fraud, transaction-monitoring, and funds-availability decisions made?
  4. What prevents one program or partner from affecting another during an outage, loss, or liquidity event?
