Loan Review

Independent evaluation of credit administration, risk ratings, underwriting, and portfolio controls.

Buying context

Why it matters

Loan review provides challenge outside the lending line and can reveal rating drift or policy exceptions before losses emerge. Scope, independence, sampling, and follow-up determine whether the work is useful.

Due diligence

Questions to ask

  1. How is the review universe risk-ranked, and what material exposures could remain outside the sample?
  2. Who performs the work, and what relationships could impair independence from lending management?
  3. How are rating disagreements resolved and repeat findings tracked to closure?
  4. Will reports distinguish isolated file defects from portfolio-wide or process-level themes?
